Only done this once about 6 months ago when the water started to taste a little off. I have still not needed to use abrasive on filters but i have washed the insides of both ss containers and all filters inside and out with dilute hydrogen peroxide. The upper vessel that holds the questionable water has a stainless steel splash guard formed on the bottom of the housing that will deflect splashed or overfilled water away from the lower storage area holding the filtered drinking water.
